Hi, I’m Julie, the photographer behind Among the Grain Photography. I’m a film and digital photographer based in Howard County, Maryland, working with families in Columbia, Clarksville, Baltimore, Washington, DC, and the surrounding areas.

My family sessions include a mix of candid moments and posed portraits. We’ll get photographs of everyone looking at the camera, but there’s also room for kids to move around, parents to jump into the frame, and things to happen without much direction.

You don’t have to choose one style or know exactly what you want before reaching out. We can figure that out together.

A Mix of Candid and Posed

I love photographing the little interactions that happen between portraits: a child leaning into their parent, siblings making each other laugh, or everyone getting distracted by something nearby.

I also know you might want a photograph of the whole family together, looking at the camera. I’ll help arrange everyone and give you direction, so you aren’t left wondering where to stand or what to do with your hands.

We can make time for different groupings, too—siblings, grandparents with grandchildren, or a few photographs of just the parents. Let me know which ones matter to you.

What Your Session Can Look Like

You don’t need to arrive knowing how to pose, and your kids don’t need to sit perfectly still the entire time.

We might walk around a little, stop somewhere with good light, take a few group portraits, and leave space for whatever happens in between. I’ll offer guidance throughout, whether that means adjusting where you’re standing or suggesting something you can do together.

If you have a particular photograph in mind, tell me. If being photographed makes you feel awkward, you can tell me that, too. You don’t have to pretend to be comfortable right away.

Choosing a Location

Your session can take place at home, at a favorite park, or somewhere you enjoy spending time together. The location doesn’t need to be elaborate. A familiar place with room to move can give us plenty to work with.

I photograph families throughout Howard County, Baltimore, Washington, DC, and nearby areas. If you don’t have a spot picked out, I’m happy to help. You can also browse my favorite locations for family photos in Maryland and DC for a few ideas.

Want to Add Some Film?

Alongside digital photography, I offer 35mm film as an optional addition.

I love its grain, color, and the small differences from one frame to the next. If you like that look, we can include some film photographs during your session. There’s no special preparation needed—we’ll keep photographing and make room for both.

Curious about what that looks like? Read more about why you might want to add 35mm film to your photoshoot.

Let’s Plan Something

Send me a little about your family, when you’re hoping to book, and anything you’d especially like photographed. You don’t need a complete plan to get started.

Whether you’re after updated family portraits, photographs with the grandparents, or a mix of everyone together and the moments in between, I’d love to hear what you have in mind.
