Why Lake Kittamaqundi Is One of My Favorite Places for Fall Photos in Columbia, MarylanD
Some places make it easy to slow down and notice what’s already there: the way the light settles on the water, the colors along the shoreline, the small moments that happen when nobody is trying too hard to pose. Lake Kittamaqundi is one of those places for me.
It’s a favorite setting for Columbia, Maryland fall photography because it offers room to wander, pause, and let a session unfold naturally. Whether we’re making family portraits or a few photos of just the two of you, the lake gives us a beautiful backdrop without asking anyone to be anything other than themselves.
A little room to settle in
The beginning of a photoshoot can feel like a small adjustment: getting used to the camera, finding your footing, figuring out what to do with your hands. I like places where we can ease into things rather than rush straight into posing.
At Lake Kittamaqundi, we can take our time near the water and follow the rhythm of the afternoon. A Lake Kittamaqundi photoshoot doesn’t need to feel like a checklist of poses. We can leave space for conversation, movement, and the moments in between—the ones that often end up feeling most like you.
Fall color, without the fuss
Autumn brings its own palette: colorful leaves, softer light, and a little more texture in the landscape. The setting has plenty to offer, but it doesn’t have to take over the photographs. I like keeping the focus on my client!
The lake and the season simply add a sense of place which is enough to make the images feel rooted in Columbia, Maryland, while leaving room for the expressions, gestures, and connections that make a photograph personal.
Photos that feel like you
My approach is documentary-inspired, with gentle guidance when you need it and plenty of room for things to happen naturally. You don’t need to arrive knowing how to pose. We can start with something simple such as walking, talking, exploring the surroundings, or just taking a moment to yourself. Then, we'll let the session unfold from there.
While individual portraits are the focus here, Lake Kittamaqundi is just as lovely for couples and family photos. The open spaces and walking paths make it easy to move around, interact, and enjoy time together without feeling confined to one spot. Whether it’s a quiet moment between two people or a family simply being themselves, the setting leaves plenty of room for **genuine connections and candid moments.
A place that feels like Columbia
For families who live nearby, the lake can make a portrait session feel connected to home. For visitors, it offers a welcoming introduction to the area. Either way, the location gives the photographs a sense of context without making them feel overly posed or formal.
As a Howard County portrait photographer, I’m always glad to work in places that feel meaningful to the people I photograph. If Lake Kittamaqundi is part of your everyday life, or simply a place you love to visit, it can be the perfect setting for pictures that feel personal.
Planning a fall session at Lake Kittamaqundi
Fall light and color change as the season moves along, so the look of the lake won’t be exactly the same from one week to the next. We can talk through the feel you’re hoping for and choose a time that works for your schedule and the kind of photographs you want.
Most of all, you don’t need to plan every moment. Bring yourselves, wear something you feel comfortable in, and let the session be a chance to spend a little time together. I’ll take care of the photographs.
